"I want to spread as much love, positivity, and compassion as I can, both as a human and a creator." - Enmanuel Alexander
Some artists can't help but radiate joy and positivity. Enmanuel Alexander, aka Eman, is one those artists. His love of music and the people around him is palpable when he's playing on stage. Not only is he an extremely talented musician, he is a connector, a builder of community. I'm so thankful to have become familiar with his art this past year and I'm excited to have learned a bit more about him through this feature. Take a moment to read about Eman and make sure to check out his links at the end of the article.
Who are you and how long have you been playing music and making art?
My name is Enmanuel, but most people know me as Eman. I am a multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and creator based out of Denver. I've lived my entire life in Colorado and grew up in Aurora. I'm probably the tallest person you've ever met or have yet to meet and I've been playing music ever since I can remember. My parents got me into piano lessons when I was young and my dad showed me some chords on the guitar probably around the same time. Over the years I learned alto sax, percussion, drums, and would dabble in guitar. I decided to start my journey in jazz in 2014 and graduated in 2020 with a bachelor's in music, with a concentration in jazz guitar. I've been making art since 2010 and I started producing beats around this time as well. I am 27 years old now and music has been my life since my earliest of memories.
What inspires your music?
Some things that inspire my music are family, friends, human connection, nature, travel, dreams, love, anime, film and video games. However, my most imporant inspiration are the musicians and artists who came before us and the ones that are here creating freely. Recently, I've been inspired by the music of Cleo Sol, Kiefer, Lianne La Havas, Monte Booker, Kenny Beats, Khruangbin, Gil Scott-Heron, Derrick Hodge and Isaiah Sharkey.
What is your goal as an artist? What do you hope to achieve?
My goal as an artist is to share my personal experience and connect with someone else out there that can relate. I want to spread as much love, positivity, and compassion as I can, both as a human and a creator.
What are your hopes and dreams for your community? Does music play a role in those dreams? If so, how?
I hope that I'm able to create a safe space where my community feels welcome, builds each other up, support others' projects and cultivate love and compassion for all. My dream is to always give back to my community and help in any way I can.
Do you have anything you'd like to promote?
I've got all kinds of things to promote! I just dropped my first 2 singles “Last Minute” and “Mystery” under my name Enmanuel Alexander. They're out on all streaming platforms. I've got a show coming up at the end of April, so keep an eye for that too. I stream my production process on Twitch and hope to collaborate with others in the community. I play at Meadowlark Bar weekly on Wednesday nights as well.
